Solar Water Heating System Maintenance and Repair

Solar energy systems require periodic inspections and routine maintenance to keep them operating efficiently. Also, from time to time, components may need repair or replacement.
You might be able to handle some of the inspections and maintenance tasks yourself, these are usually explained to you by your supplier / contractor however others may require a qualified technician.

Always ensure your supplier / installer provides a back up / maintenance service.

Periodic Inspection List

Here are some suggested inspections of solar system components. Also read your owner's manual for a suggested maintenance schedule.

  • Collector shading

Visually check for shading of the collectors on a regular basis. Shading can greatly affect the performance of solar system. Growth of trees over time or alterations to your house or your neighbour's property may produce shading that wasn't there when the collectors were installed.

  • Collector glazing and seals (Flat Plate)

Look for cracks in the collector glazing, and check to see if seals are in good condition. Plastic (Polycarbonate) glazing, if excessively discoloured or cracked, may need to be replaced.

  • Piping, wiring and insulation

Look for damage or degradation of insulation covering pipes, and wiring also check any joints between the collector and the cylinder, look for fluid leaks at pipe connections.

  • Roof penetrations.

Flashing and sealant around roof penetrations should be maintained in good condition.

  • Support structures.

Check all nuts and bolts attaching the collectors to any support structures are tight and secure.

  • Pressure relief valve / pressure settings.

Make sure the valve is not stuck open or closed and ensure the pressure in your system has not dropped below the level set by your installer.

  • Pumps.

Verify that distribution pumps are operating. Listen to see if they come on when the sun is shining on the collectors and the set temperature has been reached. If you can't hear the pump operating, then either the controller has malfunctioned or the pump has.

  • Heat transfer fluids.

Anti-freeze solutions (Glycol) in solar systems needs to be replaced periodically, we recommend this job should be carried out by a qualified installer.

  • Solar Cylinders.

Check your cylinder and ensure the temperature settings are correct.
